TRUTH: The Essential Element of a Killer Employer Brand Strategy

simple strategies to improve workforce employee retention

This week we’re teaming up with our friends from id29, a brand strategy, design and marketing studio, to share insights about how to best attract and retain talent via a well-executed Employer Brand Strategy.

The benefits of a good Employer Brand Strategy are many. They all revolve around enhancing your ability to attract, acquire, engage and retain top talent; the talent you need to meet your organization’s strategic objectives and build a culture that epitomizes your brand promise.

In the simplest of terms, Employer Brand Strategy is all about:

  • Understanding who you are as an employer

  • Understanding who you need to be as an employer; and

  • Creating an actionable plan to bridge that gap

While orchestrating a successful Employer Brand Strategy isn’t a simple task, one thing that is absolutely critical to making it work is the truth. Truth is the foundation for an effective strategy that meets your goals of being a best place to work in the eyes of your employees. To get to the vital truth, we advise you do the following:

Do the heavy lifting. First and foremost, you need to dig deep and find the fundamental truths about your organization. Who (and what) are you? What are your values? What is your promise to prospective and existing employees, and does it align with their values and needs?

Look in the mirror. Ask your management team to courageously look in the mirror and find the truths about the quality of your employer touchpoints; every interaction that your employees have with your organization and how they can be improved.

They can handle the truth. Being clear, honest and truthful with prospective and current employees is essential. Make sure they know what you expect of them and what they’ll get in return for being an integral part of the organization’s success.

Commit and make it stick. Be true to the Employer Brand Strategy plan that you’ve created—not just for a few weeks or months after launch, but on an ongoing basis. Employer Brand Strategy is no flip-of-the-switch solution. It requires ongoing work, monitoring, diligence and refinement.
