Don’t Walk, SPRINT to a New Job Opportunity

Looking to start off the new year with a new career? Your timing couldn’t be better. The historic hiring challenges facing employers are creating plentiful opportunities for job seekers, and those that are ready to put their best foot forward will reap the rewards.

If your job search is just getting started, though, some helpful advice might be in order. Consider these 6 New Year’s resolutions for candidates as you SPRINT toward an exciting career in 2022.

S is for Skills. The more skills you can offer a potential employer, the better chance you have of landing that new opportunity. This is especially true today, with fewer employees taking on more responsibilities amid a rapidly changing workplace. Invest in yourself by staying current and learning new skills, and you’ll increase the number of doors that open for you.

P is for Profile. Many candidates are constantly on social media, from LinkedIn to Facebook and Instagram. When was the last time you reviewed your profiles? More importantly, how long has it been since you freshened them with up-to-date information? It’s always the right time to do that, and if you’re looking for a new job, it’s essential.

R is for Resume. As you’re updating your profile, don’t forget to do the same with your resume. Are there new accomplishments you can point to? New skills you’ve mastered? Is your contact information up to date? Polishing your resume is vital to showcasing your talents and abilities to potential employers.

I is for Interviewing. As the saying goes, “practice makes perfect,” and that’s also true when it comes to interviewing. There are questions nearly every recruiter will ask during an interview: your experience, your achievements and challenges, and your goals. Practice answering these questions with family, friends and colleagues so you’re well-versed by the time a real interview takes place. And be sure to practice virtually, since that’s how many interviews are being done these days.

N is for Network. It’s critical to keep meeting fellow professionals, and to stay in touch with former colleagues. Those conversations often produce the best job leads; in fact, you may find out about positions before they’re posted. Don’t use the pandemic as an excuse for slacking off on networking. Even if in-person events dwindle, there are plenty of virtual opportunities to connect with others.

T is for Targets. You wouldn’t take a trip without knowing where you’re going. It works the same way in job searches. Make lists of the types of jobs and companies you find interesting, and match them with your skills and your professional network. The areas that overlap are great paths to pursue as you work toward your next opportunity.

While the labor market favors candidates, that doesn’t mean you can coast into a new career. It still takes preparation, diligence and hard work to find and secure the right opportunity. The experts at Alaant have been connecting great candidates with outstanding companies for more than 15 years, and we’re always ready to lend a hand.
