An Unsettled Job Market: Understanding Where We Are, and Where We’re Going

By virtually any measure, 2020 has been an unprecedented year. From the COVID-19 pandemic, to a contentious Presidential election, to nationwide social and economic unrest, the turbulence experienced this year will not soon be forgotten.

The business community, which has been significantly impacted, is no exception. Many organizations have been forced to reinvent themselves – some just to survive – while others have not been as fortunate. As a result, employers and employees are left wondering what’s ahead in 2021.

Finding answers with the Alaant Hiring Index

The Alaant Hiring Index seeks to capture and quantify the state of the Capital Region’s labor market – one of its most important economic indicators. As always, our assessment is based on input provided by human resource and hiring managers at companies throughout the region, both large and small.

Collectively, their feedback illustrates the health of the regional job market – both its current condition and expectations for the future – and offers rich data that companies can use in planning for the year ahead. Armed with this unique insight, Alaant is well-positioned to assist organizations in meeting their workforce needs, both today and in the future.

Gathering and assessing job market data

Our Fall 2020 survey, which is currently underway, aims to shed light on how COVID-19 has affected the area’s labor market to date, while also gauging employers’ expectations for the year ahead.

In looking back over the past six months, we ask how hiring has been impacted; if hiring has been put on hold, when it will resume; and how the workplace has changed, from the rise in remote work to the impact on productivity.

Then, we ask employers what they foresee for the start of 2021 and beyond: how hiring will change; the fields showing the most opportunity; the hiring challenges they face; and how a new administration in Washington may shape future plans.
